P0300: Random Misfire
The engine is stumbling across multiple cylinders. Worn spark plugs, tired ignition coils, or fuel delivery problems lead the list. You will usually feel this one: shaking at idle, poor acceleration, worse fuel economy.
Catch it early and this is routine maintenance territory, since plugs and coils are normal wear items. Ignore it and raw fuel starts punishing the catalytic converter, which turns a maintenance visit into a major repair.
P0420: Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold
The catalytic converter is not cleaning exhaust the way it should. Sometimes the cause is a failing oxygen sensor reading, which is the simple version. Sometimes the converter itself is worn out, often because a misfire went unaddressed for months.
Testing tells those two stories apart, and they could hardly be more different: one is a sensor swap, the other is one of the biggest repairs on the menu. This code is the single best argument for handling small codes quickly.
P0128: Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Range
The engine is taking too long to warm up, usually a stuck-open thermostat. Watch for a temp gauge that never reaches normal and weak cabin heat, something you will care about by late October.
The usual fix is a thermostat replacement, straightforward work that pays for itself in comfort and fuel economy, since a cold-running engine burns rich and a working thermostat is what gives you cabin heat on those late-October mornings.
